Abigail S.
- Lead Debate Coach

Meet Abigail, an accomplished coach and debate competitor who aims to help Potomac students reach their full potential. With her extensive experience across all debate events, Abigail qualified for nationals every year, won multiple state championships and national titles, and ranked among the top 10 competitors worldwide by the National Speech and Debate Association. As a coach, Abigail is passionate about mentoring young people and gives back to the community by volunteering for the national urban debate league. She judges and coaches almost every weekend for the nonprofit organization Chicago Debates, where she was awarded the prestigious “New Coach of the Year” award. Abigail firmly believes that debate education shapes students’ academic futures, as she has personally experienced the benefits of her own competitive spirit in both tournaments and university studies. She holds a Master’s degree in Social Science (Psychology) from the University of Chicago, and dual Bachelor’s degrees in Forensic Psychology and Sociology, all of which she obtained before the age of 20.

Coach Ben is currently a fourth-year student at the University of Chicago studying mathematics and chemistry on the pre-medical track. In high school, he debated for the Nueva School in California in both Public Forum and Parliamentary debate, where he and his partner were the first team to not only qualify for, but also break at the TOC in both events. Ben also championed the Berkeley Invitational and Round Robin in Public Forum, and advanced to late elimination rounds at several other tournaments. This will be Ben’s third year with Potomac, where he has taught classes and coached tournaments at all levels. His students have achieved numerous bids to the TOC and qualifications to NSDA Nationals, and championed tournaments at both Varsity and Middle School levels.

Ben has competed and coached public forum and parliamentary debate at the middle school, high school, and university level. He is a former captain of the Wootton Debate Team and the Brandeis Debate Society; is a former board member of the American Parliamentary Debate Association; and has instructed at debate camps across the U.S. and Canada. Ben takes debate into the real world, too. His work in political communications has involved preparing Congress and U.S. Senate candidates for interviews, debates, and other public appearances. In the classroom, in the media, and on the campaign trail, Ben loves developing, articulating, and amplifying arguments that matter—especially in collaboration with students and colleagues. Ben holds a BA, cum laude and with honors in Politics, from Brandeis University; his senior thesis examines the modern applications of an essay by French existentialist Jean-Paul Sartre.

Charles is a junior at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is currently an economics/business major. Charles debated for Richard Montgomery High School as a member of the Potomac Debate Team and competed in and reached elimination rounds at the Tournament of Champions in 2021 and 2022. Coach Christina is a second-year student at USC studying business and accounting. She debated for Potomac Debate Academy and Thomas S. Wootton High School, serving as captain for both. She qualified to the TOC, receiving multiple speaker awards at Yale, Lakelands, and NYU along the way. Christina cleared every tournament her senior year, championing NYU and qualifying to NSDA Nationals in Extemporaneous Speaking. She is excited to work with the Potomac team!

Coach Christine is a current freshman at the University of Pennsylvania where she intends on majoring in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics. She competed in Public Forum throughout her high school years at Potomac Debate Academy, where she qualified for the TOC. Notably, she reached late elimination rounds at Capital Beltway, Harvard, Stanford, Georgetown, and UK. She began coaching for Potomac her senior year of high school and looks forward to working with all students!

Coach Daniel is a freshman at Dartmouth College studying Economics with Computer Science and a former student of Potomac Debate Academy! He debated under the code Potomac LP, amassing a total of four bids to the Tournament of Champions and being ranked as high as #15th in the US. Notably, he reached late elimination outrounds at Stanford, Berkeley, UK, Jack Howe, SCU, and Georgetown. Currently, he coaches both middle school and high school Varsity travel teams, where his students have championed the Lakelands Invitational, NADC Turquoise Cup, and semifinaled at the MSTOC. He looks forward to working with all students and is excited to continue his second year at Potomac!

Dylan is currently a junior at Arizona State University. Dylan debated for two years at Coronado High School, where he led the school’s Public Forum program. As Captain of the team, he worked against a limited budget, making the most out of his limited opportunities by earning five bids out of six national circuit tournaments he attended. His notable accomplishments include championing the La Costa Canyon Invitational, making finals at the ASU Invitational, and late eliminations at the NSDA National Tournament, as well as multiple speaker awards. As a coach, Dylan has coached his teams to a collective 16 bids to the Tournament of Champions, helping debaters with a wide variety of experience realize high levels of competitive success.

Coach Jack is a student at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln studying mathematics and computer science. He competed in Public Forum with Millard North High School for four years. Jack qualified to the Gold Tournament of Champions twice, NSDA nationals once, and championed his state tournament, along with several other tournaments, as a senior. While competing on the national circuit, Jack would coach members of his team by giving one-on-one support, lecturing about new topics, and drilling in-round strategies. Jack is thrilled to continue coaching with Potomac!

Coach Katie is currently a junior at Princeton University studying History and Environmental Science. She debated as a first speaker in Public Forum for four years at Trinity Preparatory School in Winter Park Florida, and served as debate co-captain in her junior and senior years. Katie qualified to the Tournament of Champions three times, and won in the Silver Division her sophomore year. She has also reached elimination rounds at various tournaments, including NCFL Nationals, Harvard, Bronx, Minneapple, the Sunvitational, and FFL States. As debate captain, she organized frequent team meetings and has extensive experience in instructing novices at both middle and high school levels. She cannot wait to share her love of debate, public policy, and international affairs with her students!

Coach Keith has been involved in forensics for almost 20 years. A self-proclaimed jock turned theater kid, he was drawn to forensics as a way to improve his approaches to schoolwork. He quickly fell in love with argumentation theory and excelled in limited prep events and public forum debate in high school. While in college at North Dakota State University Keith qualified every event he competed in (which was often five or six speech events and at least one form of debate) every year he competed. Keith also started his coaching career at North Dakota State University, leading them to a 10th place finish in the limited entry division in just his second year coaching. He has helped coach speech and debate at a variety of high schools in Minnesota since 2015, and has helped to develop a rural debate program that helps to assist smaller schools/programs to establish forensics programs. Keith has his BS in Public Relations and Advertising and his MA in Communication Studies from North Dakota State University and his EdD in Educational Leadership from Hamline University. Outside of teaching and forensics Keith likes to spend time outside with his family, playing baseball, and cooking.

Coach Kenny is a sophomore at Columbia University. He competed for Millard North high school in Public Forum for four years. He earned 4 gold bids to the Tournament of Champions and obtained a winning record his senior year. Additionally, he championed the Badgerland tournament and made outrounds at Blake, Dowling, and Valley. Ultimately, he ended his senior year with a state championship in both Public Forum and Extemporaneous Speaking. He has also had a significant amount of coaching experience working with students on both the middle school and high school levels. As president of his school’s debate team, he led team meetings and worked with novices individually. He is very excited to be a part of the Potomac team!

Coach Keshav competed in Public Forum for 4 years at Mission San Jose High School in California. He reached the final round of the TOC and won multiple tournaments including the Harvard Round Robin, Golden Desert, Presentation, and University of the Pacific. He also reached late outrounds at various major tournaments including NCFL Nationals, the California State Championship, Glenbrooks, Apple Valley, Harvard, Stanford (twice), and Harker. He was ranked as high as 3rd on debaterankings.com and VBriefly during his senior year. At MSJ, he captained the Public Forum team, working directly with novices on the basics of Public Forum and success in the activity. He has been coaching at summer camps and during the school year for over five years since graduation, working with debaters across age groups and experience levels. Coach Keshav graduated from Vanderbilt University with Bachelor’s degrees in Neuroscience and Philosophy and from the University of Chicago with a Master’s degree in Social Science. He plans to begin medical school in Fall 2023.

Lars is currently studying at the University of Texas at Austin. In high school, he competed for A&M Consolidated for 4 years in Public Forum, Extemporaneous Speaking, and Policy debate. He has had a strong competitive success in debate, having qualified to NSDA nationals all years, reaching Quarters at TFA State and NDCA Nationals, getting 3 gold bids his senior year, championing Churchill, getting 2nd place at the Blue Key Round Robin, and a variety of other local and regional competitive achievements. Outside of Public Forum, he placed 3rd at the UIL 5A Policy state tournament and has gotten numerous bids in Extemporaneous speaking. Lars has coached teams to deep elimination rounds at tournaments like Harvard and ASU. Lars loves teaching his style that blends technicality and simplicity. He is super excited to work with y’all at Potomac!

Coach Maddie joined Potomac Debate as a coach in summer 2021. She competed on the local and national circuit in Public Forum debate for four years at Lakeville South in Minnesota. Throughout her time in high school, she advanced to out rounds at numerous national circuit tournaments. She also qualified twice to the Minnesota State Tournament, NSDA Nationals, and silver TOC. After graduating, she started coaching for both Lakeville high schools where she was at the forefront of the team’s novice program. She coached Lakeville’s first ever top five in the nation PF team to champion the Yale Invitational and earn five bids to the Tournament of Champions. In addition to coaching, Maddie is the vice president of the University of Minnesota’s NPDA team. She has also coached at several summer debate camps including the National Debate Forum, Dartmouth Debate Institute and Minnesota Debate Institute. Coach Maddie is currently in her third and final year as a political science and journalism double major at the University of Minnesota.

Coach Mai is a second year law student at the Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law at Arizona State University with an undergraduate degree from Florida State University. At Florida State, Mai competed in parliamentary debate and civic debate. In high school, Mai debated in Public Forum for Boca Raton Community High School and achieved late outrounds at the Sunvitational as well as winning prelim finishes at Harvard, Emory, and Yale. As a coach, Mai has coached two teams to be the first debaters in their programs to ever qualify to the Tournament of Champions, as well as a top 20 finish at the 2018 NSDA National Tournament. In college parliamentary debate, Mai has won almost every tournament he competed at in Florida throughout the 2018-2019 season, with a semifinal finish at the State Championships. In the 2019-2020 season, Mai broke and attained top 10 speaker awards at numerous tournaments, was a finalist at the Florida college state tournament, and was a semifinalist at nationals. In the 2020-2021 season, Mai was a finalist at the state tournament once again. In law school, Mai is a moot court competition finalist and an editor on ASU’s Sports and Entertainment Law Journal. Additionally, Mai has garnered substantial litigation experience at the Maricopa County Public Defender’s Office. Mai is deeply excited to pass his love for debate on to the next generation!

Coach Mika is a sophomore in the McCombs School of Business at the University of Texas at Austin. Mika is currently pursuing a Finance degree with a Data Analytics minor. As a debater for Westwood High School, she qualified to the Tournament of Champions was ranked as high as top ten in the state of Texas and top 32 in the nation. Notably, she advanced to late elimination rounds at many national tournaments, including Bronx, Jack Howe, Grapevine and championed a number of national tournaments including Katy Taylor. Outside of competing, Mika has coached numerous novice and JV teams debate team and helped them reach local and national success.

Coach Noah has been involved in speech & debate for almost 10 years. He joined Potomac Debate as a travel coach in spring 2018 and now coaches Public Forum Debate in the classroom. His debate journey started in high school where he competed for three years in Public Forum, Oratory, and Extemp. He reached late out-rounds at several national tournaments including Harvard, Isidore Newman, NFL Nationals, and qualified to the Tournament of Champions his junior and senior year. Afterwards, he coached for his alma mater and competed at a collegiate level, where he became the 2016 Texas State Champion in Independent Parliamentary Debate. His experience gave Coach Noah a passion for helping students build their critical thinking, public speaking, and research skills. Coach Noah has a BA in Political Science from George Washington University.

This return to the community inspired Ray to want to teach Speech and Debate again. Ray has been a drama teacher since 2003, teaching all ages from pre-K to adult.

Coach Saif joined Potomac Debate in the summer of 2021. While in high school, Saif debated for four years on the Public Forum debate team at Stuyvesant High School. He reached out rounds at a number of national tournaments, including Yale, Georgetown, Scarsdale, and many others. A graduate of Hunter College (where he majored in Religion, Political Science and Human Rights) he is currently a first year student at Yale Law School. Saif believes deeply in an inclusive debate community and debate’s ability to foster student growth. He is excited to share that passion with others.

As he entered college, Sarang plans on debating at Emory and continuing to volunteer at Urban Debate Leagues across the country.

Srikar is studying at Texas A&M University, planning to major in International Relations and Diplomacy. In high school, Srikar debated for A&M Consolidated for 4 years in Public Forum, Extemporaneous Speaking, and Policy debate, becoming a co-president of the team senior year. In his senior year, he was ranked as high as 2nd nationally with accomplishments such as placing 2nd at the Blue Key Round Robin, Quarterfinaling both the TFA State Tournament and the NDCA National Tournament, Championing the Winston Churchill Invitational, and obtaining 3 bids to the Gold Division of the Tournament of Champions. Additionally, Srikar has qualified for the NSDA national championship 3 times, and has worked diligently in his career to build a strong Public Forum program at his school by tripling its size. Outside of PF, Srikar placed 3rd at the UIL 5A Policy State tournament, and received numerous bids in extemporaneous speaking. Srikar has coached numerous teams around the nation to competitive success at the local and national level with many students reaching deep out rounds at circuit tournaments such as Harvard, perfect records and late outrounds at the TOC, and multiple qualifications to the NSDA National Championship. Srikar has been known for pushing the limits of PF with more technical policy-esque styles including various theory and “Kritical” arguments. Coming from a smaller school, Srikar worked diligently to teach himself how to debate in a unique way, and he’s excited to join y’all at Potomac!

Xuechen debated for five years at Westlake High School in Austin, Texas. She accumulated five bids to the Tournament of Champions, attending as early as her sophomore year. Xuechen has also qualified for TFA State four times and reached elimination rounds at NSDA Nationals. Most notably, she co-championed the Bronx Invitational, was 6th Speaker at the TOC, and top spoke the Harvard Round Robin. She has reached late elimination rounds, been first seed, and amassed speaker awards at countless tournaments, including Glenbrooks, Apple Valley, Grapevine, Harvard, and TFA State. She was Head Officer of the Westlake Speech and Debate Team and taught at multiple camps last summer. Xuechen is a sophomore at the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School concentrating in Finance and Statistics.

Coach Ani is a first-year student at Georgetown University where he plans on studying Global Business in the School of Foreign Service. He competed in Public Forum Debate for four years at Durham Academy, serving as team captain his senior year. He was ranked #1 in the nation at the end of the 2022-23 season and championed eight national tournaments including Yale, UK, and Sunvite (twice). He was also a two-time semifinalist at Emory’s Barkley Forum, a two-time state champion, a finalist at NDCA Nationals, and qualified to the Gold Tournament of Champions three times. His other notable accomplishments include earning over 10 gold bids to the TOC, being the top seed at TOC his senior season, and receiving top-5 speaker awards at over 5 national tournaments. With previous coaching experience as Public Forum Captain at Durham Academy, volunteer instructor at Nova Debate Camp, and instructor at the National Symposium for Debate, he has coached teams from local success to a TOC championship. Ani is incredibly excited to work with everyone at Potomac!

Coach Ayanava is a sophomore at Princeton University, where he will major in Molecular Biology with a certificate in Global Health and Health Policy. He debated for the Bronx High School of Science and was the captain of the largest school-based Public Forum team in the country in his junior and senior year. Over the course of his career, he was a 3-time qualifier to NCFL Nationals and a 3-time qualifier to the TOC with a total of 7 bids, having championed the Scarsdale Invitational and advanced through to elimination rounds at Gold TOC, Harvard, Glenbrooks, Princeton, and Yale, among others. By the end of his senior year, he helped the Bronx Science Speech and Debate team become the #1 team in the country. After first teaching debate to middle schoolers for a couple of years during high school, he is excited to start his second year with the Potomac team, and help cultivate a passionate and welcoming debate space.

Coach Chris is a Freshman at Yale University. He competed in Public Forum debate for four years for Walt Whitman High School in Bethesda. During his career, he was ranked as high as 1st in the nation, acquiring 10 bids to the Tournament of Champions in his sophomore, junior, and senior years. He championed the Yale and Georgetown Invitationals and won top speaker at the University of Pennsylvania Invitational.

Coach Elias is a sophomore at Yale University. He debated for the Bronx High School of Science for four years, serving as captain his senior year. He has championed the Yale, Glenbrooks, and Princeton tournaments, reached finals at Harvard and Penn, and broke at every national varsity tournament he attended after his first, including the TOC. Over his four years debating, Elias attained 12 gold bids to the TOC and has qualified since sophomore year. As a junior, he was ranked 2nd nationwide and by the end of senior year was ranked 1st. Elias is also passionate about education in both debate and academic settings. During his junior year he mentored sixty Bronx Science freshmen in debate as novice director, and in 2019 founded Rising Leaders – a summer program where teens investigate social issues in a multidisciplinary way.

During his impressive high school debate career, Ethan amassed 16 bids to the Tournament of Champions. He achieved success at the state level, qualifying to the State Tournament all 4 years while placing 3rd twice. Nationally, Ethan most notably championed the Plano West and Grapevine tournaments, and reached finals at the Blake Tournament. He has also gotten speaker awards from the Stanford, UT, and Plano West Tournaments, and coached as a Captain of his schools Public Forum Team. He is currently attending the University of Texas.

Coach Jennifer is a freshman at Stanford University. She was a captain on her teams at Richard Montgomery High School and on the Potomac Debate Academy. She championed the National Tournament and accumulated nine bids to the Tournament of Champions. Notably, she reached numerous semifinal and final rounds at Yale, Stanford, Harvard, Georgetown, and several round robins. She was ranked first speaker at Emory as well as second speaker at Georgetown and the Mid-America Cup. She was also on the USA Debate National Team. Jessica is an incoming freshman at Harvard University where she plans on studying economics and data science. She captained her high school’s first debate team as a sophomore and led a team of all first-time debaters to reach late elimination rounds at national tournaments. She earned a silver bid at the University of Pennsylvania tournament in Public Forum for the first time in school history and championed the University of Pennsylvania tournament’s JV division the year before. Coach Kate is a junior at Stanford University, where she plans to study philosophy and political science. She debated for The Bromfield School in Massachusetts, where she co-captained the team in her junior and senior years. Competitively, she top-spoke at Yale, was the first debater from her school to qualify to the TOC, and was the furthest advancing womxn debater at NSDA Nationals in 2019, placing 10th overall. Last year, she coached Saratoga High School, where her students obtained 12 bids to the TOC. She has also coached at the Victory Briefs Institute for the past two summers, serving as the curriculum director this year, and she continues to compete in parliamentary debate in college.

Lawrence is a sophomore at Yale University studying environmental studies and history. Coach Odin is attending Stanford University. As a debater for American Heritage School in South Florida, he qualified to the Gold Tournament of Champions twice, was a Semifinalist at the Yale and George Mason University tournaments, and was ranked as high as 11th in the nation. He has prior experience coaching at a variety of levels both as Public Forum Captain at American Heritage and as a volunteer instructor at Nova Debate Camp. Ruth is currently a freshman at the University of Michigan studying Business. At Thomas S. Wootton High School in Rockville, Maryland, she competed in Public Forum for four years, serving as captain during her junior and senior years. Her notable achievements include ranking as high as 3rd in the nation her senior year, earning 9 career bids to the TOC (qualifying 3x), and amassing 10+ speaker awards including at GTOC, Harvard, Yale, and Georgetown. Additionally, she has reached deep elimination rounds at many tournaments including Harvard, University of Pennsylvania, University of Kentucky, and Georgetown University. She has been a member of Potomac Debate Academy for seven years and as a captain and coach for the team, she specializes in teaching casewriting, back-half strategy, and developing round vision, mentoring debaters to champion and reach deep outrounds at the local and national level.

Ryan debated for Edina High School for 5 years in Public Forum Debate, qualifying for the Tournament of Champions 4 times with 15 career gold bids and being ranked #1 in the country during the 2022-2023 season. Throughout his career, he captained the team and won the National Speech and Debate Season Opener, New York City Debate and Speech Invitational, Apple Valley Tournament, Dowling Catholic Paradigm, and Milo Cup, semi-finaled the Florida Blue Key Tournament and Round Robin, and reached late elimination rounds at tournaments like Emory, Glenbrooks, Yale, and the TOC. Individually, Ryan top spoke Minnesota sections and districts and Apple Valley, and earned second speaker at Bronx and Dowling. He prefers substantive debates but has had his fair share of theory and kritical rounds.

Coach Shiv is second year at UC San Diego and debated at Del Norte High School for 4 years. During his career, he acquired 8 bids to the Tournament of Champions, qualified twice to the CHSSA state tournament, and broke at the NSDA tournament in his senior year. He also reached outrounds at 17 national circuit tournaments, including Semifinals at Berkeley and Nano Nagle, as well as Octofinals at ASU and Blake. As a president of his high school debate team, he has had extensive experience coaching teams from all skill levels, and some of the teams that he coached reached outrounds at the Tournament of Champions and Nationals, as well as Semifinals at UK, Finals at Villager, Quarterfinals at Alta, Octofinals at UNLV, and Octofinals at ASU.

Tejas is a sophomore at the University of Chicago with a prospective major in Public Policy. He debated for Del Norte High School in San Diego for 4 years, moving the program from local competitions to the national circuit. During his career, he accumulated 9 career bids to the Tournament of Champions, advancing to late outrounds at multiple national tournaments, such as semifinals at the Berkeley invitational and finals at the Villiger invitational. In addition, he reached elimination rounds at both Nationals and the California State Tournament. In addition, Tejas acted as the President of his team, coaching not only Del Norte, but also building up two middle school debate programs. Further, he has coached at multiple debate camps and privately coached teams to 11 bids to the TOC in his senior year of high school. Tejas is incredibly excited to work with everyone at Potomac!

Coach Theo is currently a freshman at Harvard University, hoping to study Computer Science and Government. In high school, Theo debated for Newton South High School in Newton, Massachusetts. In his debate career, he both Semifinaled and Quarterfinaled the TOC, championed Columbia and the Presentation Round Robin, reached finals at the Blake tournament, and placed top 16 at the National Speech and Debate tournament. Outside of competing, he helped coach at Newton South and as a volunteer at his middle school and virtually in the Dominican Republic.

Coach Thomas is a junior at Rice University in Houston Texas. He debated at the Blake School in Minneapolis. Throughout his career, he broke at national tournaments including UK, Bronx, Glenbrooks, and Apple Valley. He also performed well at the state level, placing second his junior year and reaching quarterfinals his senior year. He also performed well in championship season, reaching quarterfinals at NDCA his junior year, and closing it out his senior year, placing 11th at NSDA his junior year and 9th his senior year, and breaking at TOC his junior year and was the Champion his senior year. He is working at NDF Boston and the Intensive the summer of 2019.

Coach Vishnu is a freshman at Claremont McKenna College, studying applied mathematics and financial economics. He competed in Public Forum debate for four years at Whitman. He was ranked as high as 1st in the nation, accumulating 12 gold bids to the Tournament of Champions. Most notably, he championed Yale and Georgetown and finished top four at Stanford and Columbia. Vishnu started debating in middle school with Potomac and is excited to be back!

Coach Will is a freshman at George Washington University studying International Affairs. As a debater for Park City High School in Utah, he qualified to the Tournament of Champions twice and was the top-ranked debater in the state. Nationally, he semifinaled the Stanford Invitational and won the Alta Silver and Black. Outside of competing, he taught a city-wide debater workshop in Johannesburg, South Africa. Recently, he was the Head Public Forum Coach for Park City High School where he taught teams ranging from national competitors to novices.
